Care & Maintenance

For hair extensions

Products:

  • Use required hair care products to fully extend the life of your extensions. Whitney Wiet Salon requires the purchase and use of the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatment and proper brush that is specially made to help the extensions last the longest. The cost is typically $125 for all 4 products, but as a bundle at first appointment Whitney Wiet Salon gives a special price of $100.

  • Avoid putting any silicon-based oil products on extensions unless they are recommended. Leave-in conditioners and certain hydrating oils are great for hair extensions, especially if they are feeling dry.

Sleeping Instructions:

  • I recommend that all hair-extension users sleep with one of the following, low braid, piggy tail braid or a low ponytail. Taking these precautionary steps will reduce the friction caused from tossing and turning during your sleep cycle.

  • Never go to bed with wet hair!!

  • Using a satin pillowcase keeps their hair from tangling at night.

  • Make sure to brush extensions after waking up to avoid any knots or tangles from forming into larger knots or tangles.

Excessive Perspiration

  • Doing any activities that cause an excessive amount of perspiration is one of the main causes of tangling and matting. If you notice a tangle or slight knot, we recommend that you start from the inner side of your hair-extensions and work outwards. Always have hair in a ponytail when exercising or during any activity that causes perspiration.

Tanning Lotion/Spray and Sunscreen

  • Any contact with tanning lotion or spray may cause color alterations to your hair-extensions. Before visiting a tanning salon tie your hair in an up-do and using a plastic cap will help avoid direct contact.

  • Before applying sunscreen put hair in a top knot, apply the sunscreen and let it absorb(at least 10 minutes). Then you can take the top knot out if you so choose too.

Swimming

  • Avoid salty or chlorinated water if possible.

  • Prior to any contact with the ocean, lake, or chlorine water, you MUST put your hair in a ponytail with a braid!! This will ensure that the hair extensions will not get tangled or matted due to water. I would also recommend damping your hair with water and a slight coat of conditioner. This will prevent your hair from soaking up harsh chemicals or minerals. Upon exiting the ocean, lake, or pool wash your hair in lukewarm water with a generous amount of deep conditioner.

  • Salt and chlorine harm your hair extensions just like they harm your natural hair. This may compromise the quality of the extension and hair may become dry or brittle, shortening the life of the hair you just invested in. If you do choose to swim or get your extensions wet, do not leave your hair up, let it down and try to blow dry after you are done

BRUSHING INSTRUCTIONS

  • It is extremely important to understand that brushing is an essential part in maintaining the longevity of your hair-extensions. Since all brushes are not created equally and not all brushes are meant to be used with hair extensions,

  • Use the extension brush that will need to be purchased at the initial installation service. The extension brush prevents tangling and is specially designed so it won't pull or catch on the application points. Brush 2 to 3 times a day and before showering or wetting hair. Hold the roots of the hair with one hand while brushing in a downward motion with the other. Brush gently, and be particularly careful in the root section where extensions are attached. Never put excessive tension on the extensions. It is best to brush extensions when hair is dry.

  • Brush hair thoroughly prior to shampooing and conditioning. If the hair must be brushed when hair wet, hold your hair in a ponytail in a tight fist at the nape of your neck and brush hair with your other hand making sure there is no tension on the scalp.

  • It is also important to brush your hair all the way up to the scalp with the brush provided to you. Any hair below where attached may tangle if it is not brushed on a daily basis. Throughout the day your extensions may get tangled and we suggest using a leave-in conditioner before blow drying and brushing as frequent as possible.

  • Brushing your hair-extensions at least 2 times a day(morning and night)

  • Section off the rows of hair extensions and start from the bottom row and move up to the top row

How to brush

  • Brush your hair-extensions while you hold down on the point of installation with one hand, use the other hand to brush from the mid shaft all the way down to your ends. Repeat as necessary

and remember…

  • If you notice a tangle, slight knot or matting, I strongly recommend that you start from the inner part of your hair-extensions and work outwards. If you are not able to brush it out yourself, contact me asap so I can fix it before it continues to get worse!

  • ** If at maintenance appointment the hair extensions are tangled or matted, Whitney Wiet Salon will charge $50 for every extra 15 minutes it takes to remove the matted/tangled hair!

Detangling Instructions

  • Clipping half you hair in an up-do

  • Work from the inside of your hair-extensions and out

  • Hold down the point of installation with one hand

  • Use the other hand to brush from the mid shaft all the way down to your ends

  • Repeat until you entire head has been nicely brushed

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Washing your hair has become something we do subconsciously, an instinctual thing at this point. However, let's keep in mind that something this basic still requires careful attention for a long lasting set of hair-extensions.

  • Shampoo the hair as infrequently as possible and use a dry shampoo to absorb oils and make hair feel and smell fresh.

  • Hard or mineral intense water may also deteriorate the condition of the hair.

  • Shampoo extensions with extra care and gentleness. Apply conditioner only to the ends of hair. Any conditioner that comes in contact with the attached area of the extension can likely result in a sooner move up appointment due to slippage from the conditioner. It is important to condition hair because extensions do not get the same nutrients and vitamins your actual hair does, so you must condition your extensions.

Prior to washing

  • Start by sectioning off each row and brushing through your hair in a vertical motion from the roots downward

Shampoo Instructions

  • It is recommended that you wash your hair in the same current as the water flow.

  • Avoid washing your hair in a sink, tub, or upside down

  • Wet your hair in the same current flow with lukewarm water

  • Be sure to completely wash your scalp to avoid buildup of products which may cause your extensions to slip.

  • Using your fingertips, lather the shampoo on your hair in a more of a vertical motion rather than a circular motion. This will keep the hair from creating tangles and matting.

Conditioning

  • Do not put conditioner at the roots of your hair

  • Make sure to condition only from the midshaft of you hair and down

  • Let it seep in for 3~5 minutes and wash it off

Hair Drying & Styling Instructions

  • Blow dry at roots is essential to maintain the health of your natural hair and the longevity of the hair extensions.

  • It is Extremely Important to be gentle with wet hair. Hair is more elastic therefore can be stretched when wet, this is why you want to blow dry at roots immediately so the natural hair isn’t being weighed down by the sopping wet hair extensions. Moral of the story, hair is stronger when dry!

  • Blow-Drying-Section off the rows of hair extensions and blow dry row by row.

  • Holding the blow dryer from the top, blow the air downward in a sweeping motion. Repeat until your hair is dried.

Remember…

  • Blow-drying your hair in a vertical motion from above will help keep it healthy, smooth and tangle free. Using a heat protectant will help to keep your hair healthy and last longer.

  • Heat tools temperature should be ideally set at around 380 degrees but never above 400 degrees. Just like with natural hair, too much mechanical heat will damage hair. When you do use heat tools, be sure to use a heat protectant. Use the lowest heat setting on your heat tool, then increase as needed

Move up appointments

  • Always come to move up appointments with freshly shampooed hair. No conditioner or styling products in the hair. And dried and straightened!!

  • Move up appointments are required (not suggested) every 5-7 weeks! Whitney Wiet Salon requires you to schedule 2 move up appointments in advance. This will prevent the weft from hanging too far from the scalp, exposing your own hair, which leaves room for your brush to snag or tangle and put more tension on your natural hair.

  • You must maintain salon aftercare instructions for extensions. If not, you will compromise the health and integrity of your own hair as well as shorten the life of your extension hair.

  • Understand the importance of maintaining appointments. Spacing appointments too far apart can cause serious stress and damage on natural hair!!!

  • It is normal for the extensions to feel a bit uncomfortable when first installed because the scalp is not accustomed to the weight of the extra hair. Some extension wearers can feel itchiness and irritation but typically this feeling subsides.

  • If it is too uncomfortable to sleep, try Tylenol or ibuprofen. Your extensions should not be painful but if you are in pain contact Whitney Wiet Salon LLC to adjust or remove your extensions.

  • If taken proper care of, your extension hair will last about 8-12 months with proper care and maintenance. It is normal that extension hair over time will break down which means it sheds(gets thinner) and split ends(gets shorter) . During the 8-12 months ,some of the older wefts we will have to be switched out new wefts in order to maintain the same length and fullness.

  • These products are designed for licensed professionals; I strongly recommend never attempting removal without seeking a licensed professional.
